Founded in 2006 by the former US Vice President Al Gore, the climate reality project seeks to catalyze climate actions across the globe through intensive and enriched training aimed at organizations and individuals from all walks of society.
The fifty-fourth (54th) session of the climate reality training was held in Accra at the Conference Centre from November 13 to 15 and conveyed climate advocates and activists from across West Africa in a bid of educating and equipping them with the essential tools to advance climate solutions.
The project Officer in charge of climate change education and awareness creation at Greener Impact International, Mr. Mawuena Evamenam Goka was among the hundreds of young people who had the privilege to participate in this training. The training produces and empowers climate reality leaders with the mission to advance climate literacy and inspire global action against climate change. Mr. Goka was excited to receive this training directly from the former US vice president Mr. Al Gore. “I feel inspired and empowered to contribute to the change I want to see” He remarked.
Back from the training, he shared with the other colleagues of Greener Impact International the insight he gained which goes. This fifty-fourth (54th) session of the climate reality training was with an aim to awaken more conscience to the potential that Africa has to develop in a sustainable way. For this reason, Mr Al Gore did not stop hammering in his communications that Africa, on its road to development, does not need to follow the path that the Global North journeyed through since the era of the industrial revolution which has led the globe into the climate crisis now being experienced.
Using an analogy about the expansion of mobile phones in Africa, he did draw the attention of the attendees that if Africa was able to leapfrog into the development of the new mobile phones technology without necessarily having passed by the development of the “Line to Line” telephone, then it is also possible to embrace the path of development by leapfrogging into the renewable energies without passing by fossil fuels.
He did not hide his disapproval of the hypocrisy some great Nations and big fossil fuel companies of the world are using when it comes to phasing out fossil fuels. For him, the best way to putting a stop to the climate crisis as per today’s knowledge is to totally quit the use of fossil fuels. Any other alternatives being raised to allow the continuation of fossil fuel exploitation is irrelevant in this century.
In conclusion, the core take away from all the communications during this training come down to the following sentence: “There is urgency to address climate change through policies, sustainable and renewable practices”.
